The curiosity about Gibraltar is that Spain claims sovereignty over it and according to Article X of the Treaty of Utrecht, 'the town and castles of Gibraltar, together with its harbour, defences and forts' in 1713 would be the property of the British Crown in perpetuity in territory under Spanish jurisdiction, and would revert to Spain if the United Kingdom renounced or disposed of this property in any way.
Situated in the Bay of Algeciras, Gibraltar has a mountain of more than 400 metres above sea level from which fantastic views can be enjoyed and Morocco can be seen. It has a population of 29,752 inhabitants in an area of less than 7 km².
The rock of Gibraltar
The Rock of Gibraltar, sometimes called the Pillar of Hercules, is a rocky massif connected to the Iberian Peninsula by a sandy isthmus, itself cut by a channel. It consists of a monolithic limestone promontory located in the extreme southwest of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Its summit has an altitude of 426 m above sea level. Most of the upper part of the Rock is covered by a nature reserve where some 250 Gibraltar macaques live, the only primates that exist in the wild in Europe. The macaques, together with a labyrinthine network of tunnels, serve as an attraction for large numbers of tourists.
How to climb the Rock of Gibraltar?
There are several ways to climb up to see the monkeys: you can walk and hike, you can also take a cable car to the top, or you can even hire tours that will show you all the corners of the city. The cost varies each year, we will email you all the options when the date approaches.
